Fresh off the heels of NBA commish Stern threatening another couple of weeks stricken from the regular season, I say this…..WHO CARES? It’s football season! Well, except this past Monday night’s game. What was the final score, 12-7? Were these the Ravens or the Orioles? Got to be the Ravens because I haven’t seen Orioles fly in October yet.
This week’s talk has been all about the NBA strike and now this NBA all across the world tour. I don’t think that’s a wise move by the players. Yes, they gain commercial appeal abroad and yes, they get some exposure, but there’s always that what if. What if you tear something? What if some become monks and take a vow of no basketball for life? What if they get caught hiding in a drainage pipe and get killed by some kid in a Yankees hat? Call me a realist, I guess. And now LeBron, Carmelo, and Chris Paul pull out of this tour. It's falling apart before it starts.
In some more football news, did everybody see the shellacking the Saints gave Indianapolis? New Orleans won the contest by a Madden score of 62-7. When this team is on – THEY ARE ON! My Giants were on their bye and the other NY team miraculously beat the Chargers. As you may notice, I’m extremely biased in my opinions. I may or may not mention the Jets sometimes, I don’t care and neither should you. The Jets suck. Period. Other than the Saints massacre and rookie DeMarco Murray torching the Rams for 250+ yards, it was an overall ho-hum week in the NFL. T.O. actually made the news this week. He held a private workout for NFL teams. I cannot emphasize the word private enough as no one showed up to this private workout. How embarrassing. All is not lost for T.O., as he did receive a contract offer from the Chicago Rush in the Arena Football League. Here's some funny shit: This team's GM is Gene Nudo, as in Paul Bearer from WWF, remember him?
This past Saturday, I tuned in to HBO to see Nonito Donaire’s bout against Omar Narvaez. Remember this name – Nonito Donaire. He’s another Filipino flying through his opponents. Already considered as one of boxing’s pound for pound champions at 26, he’s taking the Manny Pacquiao route to stardom. He’s currently the top bantamweight in the world and states that he wants to move up to maybe 126, which is featherweight by the end of next year. Anyways, in this fight, Donaire took Narvaez to school. There are always going to be critics that says he should have knocked him out or he should have looked better, but Narvaez didn't come to win, he came to collect a paycheck and get his name out there. Narvaez is a defensive specialist and pure counter puncher and Donaire just couldn't penetrate his defenses enough to score a knockout but he did connect with some shots en route to a unanimous decision.
