On The Block Sports with Nasty Los *Boxing Edition

My last boxing edition ruffled some feathers of some Mayweather fan boys around my way. Like I told them, log on to Street Khemistry to my blog or hit me up on Twitter @NASTYLOS. Let us see how valid your arguments really are when the world reads them.

Next week is the much anticipated rematch of Miguel Cotto vs. Antonio Margacheato. This fight almost got cancelled this week. The New York State Athletic Commission ordered Margacheato to undergo a last minute eye exam. As we all know, during his last fight against Manny Pacquiao, he fractured his orbital bone and had procedures done to remove a cataract in his right eye. There was a chance that had Margacheato been denied a license here in NY, that his fight might have been moved elsewhere. Cotto dropped a bomb by saying that if Margacheato did not get a license to fight here in NY, he would not fight him at all. Cotto said that he signed on to fight Margacheato because it would take place here, in NYC, home of his many, many supporters. Cotto is on record as saying that he does not think Margacheato should be fighting at all and I agree with him. He got caught with plaster in his hand wraps. If you feel that you need to cheat in boxing, then you have no excuse to further continue fighting. He should have been suspended for life. But leave it to his promoter Bob Arum, who ironically is Miguel Cotto's promoter, to get Margacheato his license. Bob Arum along with Golden Boy, is the epitome of what's wrong with boxing today. But that's another issue for another time.
I have been a Cotto fan since he knocked out Ceballos on the Shane Mosley/De la Hoya undercard. Still a fan today but I think he's done. After his fallout with his trainer uncle, he's never been the same. That first fight with Margacheato, he got destroyed in the later rounds. The Mexican obviously had plaster during this fight. I have never seen a boxer's face get cut up like that. There are post fight pictures of that fight that depict Margacheato's cracked hand wraps. How in the world does gauze crack? That fight damaged Cotto's frame of mind. He would cover up like crazy once he got hit with a good shot in fights after. He just looked like a fighter who is at his end of his career.
Cotto hired Emmanuel Stewart a couple of months back and he looked more like his former self. This is a fight that I can't predict. I need to see how he reacts to one of Margacheato's combos to the head. If Cotto doesn't have a Rocky moment and remember that ass beating he received at the hands of this same man, he would be okay. But if he gets shell shocked and covers up like crazy like he's scared, then he's going to have a problem.
Tonight, it's another Mexico vs. Puerto Rico boxing match. Saul Canelo Alvarez fights Kermit Cintron on HBO. For those who don’t follow boxing like that, Canelo Alvarez is a solid middleweight prospect who is tearing up the competition....even if that competition consists of school teachers, principals, taxi drivers, and bartenders. Every Mexican fighter always has like 25 padded victories over such "competition" before getting into the spotlight. We call this the Chavez route. But Alvarez looks like he's the real deal. Kermit Cintron is by far his stiffest challenge. Cintron is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Antwone Smith after losing his previous two fights. Kermit shows up when he wants to show up. He looked very good against Alfredo Angulo, giving him his first loss and looked good against Sergio Martinez, earning him a controversial draw. But on the other hand, he looked out of his league as well against Margacheato, Paul Williams, and Carlos Molina. I see Canelo Alvarez using his size and power to earn a knockout victory in 6.
HBO is also broadcasting the Adrien Broner/Vincente Rodriguez fight as well. Broner is a hot shot prospect from Cincinnati, Ohio. But I don't like him. I have this issue with boxers who get these controversial victories and don’t grant an immediate rematch to the rightful winner of the bout. Such is my beef with Broner. Back in March, Broner fought Daniel Ponce de Leon. This was an excellent fight in which I believe, as well as millions of other people who seen the fight, that Ponce De Leon was the victor. His opponent tonight would be Vincente Rodriguez who has taken the Argentinean Chavez route. His records stands at 34-2, but has never fought out of Argentina. Expect Broner to knock him out by 3.
Also on this card is another hot shot prospect, Gary Russell Jr. And HBO definitely dropped the ball on this one as his fight is not being televised. He's fighting Mexican journeyman, Heriberto Ruiz. Even though his record is an impressive 47-11, most of his victories have come against much lesser quality opponents than Mr. Gary Russell. I see Russell dominating the entire 10 rounds of this fight.
I love these boxing nights.....because I have one more boxing match to talk about. On Fox Deportes, the Mexican pretty boy, Jorge "El Travieso" Arce is defending his title for the second time against the Indonesian Time Bomb, Angky Angkotta. I never heard of Angkotta, like at all LOL. Looking at his record, all but 3 of his 30 bouts were in Indonesia. I doubt he comes away as the victor in this one. Arce by knockout in 5.
For those of you that watch MMA, there's the Bellator Fighting Championship 59 tonight. I'm only interested in the Cuban Alexis Vila fight. He defected from Cuba and hasn’t seen his daughter for 15 years. He's hoping for this big payday so he can send for his family. He's fighting a tough Eduardo Dantas. Go get your family, Vila!!!
