They say that revenge is a dish best served cold or in Miguel Cotto's case, via a TKO. This past Saturday night, we witnessed one of the most anticipated rematches in recent boxing history. Miguel Cotto absolutely demolished Antonio Margacheato here in NYC. It wasn't a good fight by traditional standards but it was a hell of a good ass beating. Miguel Cotto picked apart Margacheato from the opening bell and by the 3rd round, the Mexican's eye was already closed. Cotto made it perfectly clear that he wanted to focus on that surgically repaired eye and he did just that. This whole fight was one-sided but I enjoyed every single second of it, as well as the millions of Puerto Ricans around the world. The crowd in MSG that night was electric and very boisterous, even booing during the Mexican national anthem, which was by far the funniest moment that night. Margacheato got in his shots every now and then but never phased Cotto. I was focused on seeing Cotto's reaction when he got hit by some shots to see if he would suffer from psychological effects, Rocky style, and change his game plan. But it was obvious that Margacheato lost all power once his Plaster of Paris sidekick was discovered. Excellent overall performance from Miguel Cotto, who improved his record to 37-2.
What's next for these guys? Margacheato, I think we have seen the last of him. His right eye is severely messed up furthermore, this fight should not have happened, and his license to fight should not have been approved back when he fought Pacquiao. The man is a criminal and an embarrassment to boxing. For Cotto, I think he has a couple of good fights left in him. Now is the time to collect the big paychecks, which means he has to part ways from Top Rank when his contract expires on 12/31 because Bob Arum won't get him the big fights. The only big fight I see if he stays with Top Rank would be a rematch with Manny Pacquiao, Top Rank's other cash cow. I definitely see that rematch happening if Cotto resigns with Top Rank. Bob Arum says March 17th would be Cotto's next fight date and to screw Pretty Boy Floyd some more, I think he's going to make Pacquiao his opponent. But if not Pacquiao, then who? I know it's not a big money fight, but I would love for Arum to make Chavez Jr fight Cotto and make Mexico cry all over again.
If Cotto severs ties with Top Rank and signs with Golden Boy, he would have more opportunity for mega fights. First and foremost with Pretty Boy Floyd, that is IF, Floyd doesn't get scared and "retire" again. Saul Canelo Alvarez, Mexico's next big thing. He's no cupcake like Chavez Jr, this guy is for real. Tremendous body puncher, like how Cotto used to be and really heavy handed. Victor Ortiz would be a potential opponent, as well as these guys if they decide to come down in weight, Alfredo Angulo, James Kirkland, and Luis Collazo.
This weekend's fight on HBO is Amir Khan vs Lamont Peterson. I applaud Khan for taking this fight and in Peterson's hometown, as most champions wouldn't do that. Peterson might be Khan's most dangerous opponent to date. Should be a good one. I'm liking the underdog in this one, Peterson by KO in 7. Also on Dish Network PPV, Brian Viloria defends his WBO flyweight title against Giovani Segura in Manila. These two fighters are former sparring partners. Segura is on the pound for pound list and promises a KO win in Viloria's hometown. This one should be exciting. I've seen Segura fight twice and both times it was against Ivan Calderon, and both times Segura destroyed Calderon. I'm going with Segura to win by knockout early in 4.
